VADS now a VMware Service Provider

By Charles F Moreira

VMware awarded VADS with VMware vCloud Powered status at VMware Solution Symposium 2012 in Petaling Jaya on 1 November, 2012.

Founded in 1991, VADS is a wholly-owned ICT and business process outsourcing (BPO) arm of Telekom Malaysia and with this recognition, it’s now a member of the VMware Service Provider Programme and will further enhance VADS current virtualisation services with VMware’s advanced cloud computing technologies such as vSphere and vCloud Director.

“With this validation and recognition, VADS Cloud users are assured of greater efficiency and reliable performance and we will continue to develop our cloud services in tandem with the industry’s growth,” said Ahmad Azhar Yahya, VADS executive director and chief executive officer.

VADS customers can now easily shift their workloads from theit vSphere-based virtualised or private cloud to the vCloud powered service and back again.

vCoud Director orchestrates the provisioning of software-defined datacenter services as complete virtual datacenters, complete with virtualised compute, networking, storage, and security, that are ready for use in a matter of minutes. They basically simplify IT infrastructure provisioning, and enable IT to imediately respond to changing business needs without having to worry about the physical configuration of hardware.

The virtual datacentre is a logical container which provides all infrastructure services necessary to make workloads operational in minutes. Applications provisioned into these elastic containers are automatically placed in the most optimal vCenter Server cluster, alleviating IT overhead around balancing server capacity.

Multiple resource allocation models define how virtual datacentre resources are used by different teams and organisations. Resources can be reserved for guaranteed availability or consumed “as you go” for maximum efficiency.

“Malaysian companies implement cloud is to optimise infrastructure investment,” said Ahmad Azhar. VADS customers include all Telekom Malaysia business units, as well as companies ranging in size from small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) all the way to multinationals.

“Moving forward, we see more adoption of private cloud by government-linked companies and other large companies,” he added.

VADS began in 1991 as a joint venture between IBM Global Network Services and Telekom Malaysia, before it was fully acquired by Telekom Malaysia.

In its early days, it provided Frame Relay, ATM, SONET and other legacy broadband connectivity to companies over leased lines and now mostly provides IP-VPN (Internet Protocol – Virtual Private Network) connectivity.

Besides services based on VMware-based cloud services, VADS also provides Microsoft Office365 public cloud and VADS MySolution and PowerIT services.

For SMEs, MySolution’s softwar-as-a-service (SaaS) offers virtual office, business intelligence & analytics, and communications & collaboration applications. It provides a hosted computing environment as platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and hosted computing resources as infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS).

New to the MySolution offerings is VADS Premium Cloud based upon VMware technologies. It’s a subscription-based, hosted IaaS solution with 99.9% guaranteed up time with a high-availability infrastructure backed up by a service-level agreement. Subscription starts from RM348 per month for 2GB RAM and 100GB disk space/100GB DT up to RM1,728 per moth for 32GB RAM, 100GB disk space/500GB DT. VADS’ website does not explain what “DT” means, though it could mean “data transfer.”

Other MySolution subscription services include VADS Cloud Server, VADS Cloud Storage, VADS Cloud Sites web hosting, and coming soon are VADS Cloud Load Balancer, VADS Cloud Firewall, VADS Cloud IDS/IPS (intrusion detection and intrusion prevention) and VADS Cloud Antivirus.

PowerIT is a complete suite of services for large enterprises and government agencies. It consists of Consultation, Design, Systems Integration, Operation and Asset Management modules which are required to build, operate and run private or hybrid clouds, which VADS supports from end-to-end.
