TM Embarks on Broadband Improvement Plan to Provide Malaysians With Greater Value Offerings[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) today announced its Broadband Improvement Plan for 2017, as part of the Company’s initiative to provide Malaysians with greater value broadband offerings.
Under the Broadband Improvement Plan, TM’s Home customers will be enjoying higher broadband speeds at a better value. With the plan in place, it will enhance the nation’s average broadband speed and bring the price per Mbps down for the benefit of the Rakyat. This is in line with TM’s position as Malaysia’s Convergence Champion, with the most comprehensive suite of fixed and mobility broadband value offerings.
Present to announce the plan in a media briefing were Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM, Datuk Bazlan Osman, Executive Director / Group Chief Financial Officer, TM and Imri Mokhtar, Executive Vice President, Consumer & SME, TM.
Speaking at the media briefing, Tan Sri Zamzamzairani said, “We welcome the recent announcement by our Prime Minister of Government’s aspiration to make high speed broadband access more affordable for the Rakyat. The budget addresses specific measures to strengthen and advance the digital economy with the aim of enhancing the country’s prosperity in a balanced, fair and inclusive manner. We applaud the Government’s acknowledgement on the importance of digital connectivity to revolutionise Malaysia’s economic activity. The added focus in increasing reach, quality and affordability creates a path towards the realisation of our long term digital transformation journey supported by convergence. We are pleased that the Government recognises that Broadband is one of the key components that contributes to the nation’s Digital economy growth. We are fully supportive of the initiatives to further upgrade nationwide broadband reach and adoption, especially for educational institutions; and the initiatives to support Enterprises, SMEs and start-ups as key economic drivers.”
The Broadband Improvement Plan will initially benefit TM’s home customers in the High Speed Broadband (HSBB) and Sub-urban Broadband (SUBB) project areas.
Under the initiative, the average broadband speeds for residential UniFi customers will be doubled at the same price. Eligible customers nationwide will begin enjoying the upgrades in stages, starting from January 2017 onwards. In addition, TM will also be introducing a new greater value broadband package offering for non-UniFi customers in 2017.
Imri added, “The announcement made during the tabling of Budget 2017 was timely, as TM has already embarked on the initiative to upgrade the broadband speeds of our existing customers in April this year when we launched our UniFi PRO PLAN™ offering 100Mbps alongside other value added offerings. Some of our loyal customers have been upgraded to the package with higher speed while maintaining the price that they are currently paying. This is in addition to the earlier higher value broadband packages when we introduced our UniFi ADVANCE PLAN™ offering 30Mbps and 50Mbps along with other value added offerings. With the Broadband Improvement Plan, we will accelerate the upgrading by extending it to more customers, according to their eligibility and depending on technical availability of the services at their areas. This is testament to our commitment to drive broadband adoption nationwide, providing unlimited experiences, unmatched choices and unbeatable value for everyone.”
To date, TM has more than 2.37 million broadband customers of which over 900,000 are UniFi customers. More than 60% of TM’s broadband customers are now on packages of 4Mbps and above, while approximately 68% of UniFi customers are on packages of 10Mbps and above. This is reflective of the current consumption and behavior patterns of TM’s customers today.
“Meanwhile, we will also continue to work together with the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia as well as the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) towards achieving the industry’s overall long term objectives. As Malaysia’s Convergence Champion, TM looks forward to be part of this exciting journey.
