MCT SUBMARINE CABLE SYSTEM COMPLETES ITS CONNECTIVITY ROUTE VIA MALAYSIA

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), Malaysia’s Convergence Champion continues to play its role as the nation’s No. 1 Converged Communications Services Provider when the Company announced the completion of the Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand (MCT) submarine cable system at an event held in Cambodia recently.

The momentous event, attended by Samdech Techo HUN Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, H.E. Mr. Tram Iv Tek, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, as well as numerous other local and international VIPs, marks the beginning of a new era of improved and secured internet connection for the region. MCT will also be ASEAN’s latest business catalyst that promises greater service efficiency and reduced tariffs for the region.

Commenting on this latest achievement, Mohamad Rozaimy Abd. Rahman, Executive Vice President, Global Wholesale, TM said, “TM is indeed proud to represent Malaysia in yet another esteemed regional project and to be given the opportunity to partner with Telcotech of Cambodia and Symphony Communication of Thailand in connecting the region. The MCT cable system will definitely play an important role to the business growth of ASEAN especially in telecommunication sector and it will become the catalyst for other growing industries in Indochina that requires telecommunication infrastructure as communication is an essential element for current businesses in this era. The completion of MCT submarine cable system marks another major milestone for TM as the regional managed wholesale player towards enhancing the ASEAN connectivity. Furthermore, TM supports and promotes any initiatives towards the success of Asean regional economic integration specifically the Asean Economic Community (AEC) through enhanced infrastructure and communications connectivity.”

TM signed the agreement for a joint investment with Telcotech (an EZECOM company) of Cambodia and Symphony Communication of Thailand for the development of MCT submarine cable system back in May 2015. MCT is Cambodia’s first submarine cable which spans approximately 1,300 km and will position Cambodia as the gateway to Asia which enables Cambodia to harvest the Asia traffic and extend the connectivity to ASEAN and the rest of the world via Malaysia.

TM is a member of various submarine cable systems consortiums in the region, which include Asia America Gateway Cable Network (AAG), South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe Cable System 3 (SEA-ME-WE3 – SMW3), SEA-ME-WE4 (SMW4),  Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2), Batam-Rengit Cable System (BRIGHT), Batam-Dumai-Melaka Cable System (BDM), Dumai-Melaka Cable System (DMCS), Bay of Bengal Gateway (BBG), the latest; SEA-ME-WE5 (SMW5), and TM’s very own Cahaya Malaysia.  TM also invests in other cable systems such as Japan – US Cable Network (JUSCN) and South Atlantic 3 / Western Africa Submarine Cable / South Africa Far East (SAT-3/WASC/SAFE).
