Cyberjaya – 1st Lora Smart City In Southeast Asia
Cyberview Sdn Bhd (“Cyberview”) and Atilze Digital Sdn Bhd (“Atilze”), a wholly owned subsidiary of Yen Global Berhad, today signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (the “MoC”) in respect of a partnership to build, operate and commercialize a city-wide long range (LoRa) network in Cyberjaya (the “Collaboration”). The signing ceremony was held earlier today at Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur, where the MoC was signed by YBhg. Dato’ Faris Yahaya, Managing Director of Cyberview and Mr. Gerard Lim, Chief Executive Officer of Atilze.
This collaboration strategically positions Cyberjaya as the first smart city in Southeast Asia connected with a city-wide LoRa network.
LoRa is a ready and available low power, long range, wide area network (LPWAN) technology that is more advanced and is designed to meet the demands of today’s Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services. In view of its characteristics, LoRa technology has also been proven to reduce cost due to its minimal infrastructure requirements, fast deployment with minimal configuration, and lower cost of gateway and modules. From the technology and cost perspectives, LoRa is a necessary catalyst to unlock the next phase of smart city development for Cyberjaya.
The Collaboration is a project initiation by both Cyberview and Atilze in taking the first step and moving Malaysia towards an advanced ICT (Information and Communications Technology) country. Cyberjaya is a Global Tech Hub that has been selected as a ‘living lab’ for IoT technologies under the National IoT Strategic Roadmap.
Pursuant to the Collaboration’s terms and conditions, Atilze will supply the LoRa gateways and antenna systems, nodes and modules and access to the IoT data cloud platform for the transmission
of the data. Upon the completion of the installation, Atilze will continue to manage, operate and provide maintenance, service and support services for its LoRa network in Cyberjaya. The LoRa gateways and antenna systems will be supplied at no cost to the Collaboration, whilst Cyberview provides access to towers and building roof tops.
“I believe that by adopting the concept of Smart City Living we will improve the quality of urban living standards, safety for the citizens and efficiency of our community. Using LoRa technology, we will enable a cost effective means of implementing viable and relevant IoT applications for Cyberjaya to enhance urban management, ” said Mr. Gerard Lim, Chief Executive Officer of Atilze.
The MoC inks a one (1) year period where the IoT applications will be used as pilot project. The Collaboration’s IoT applications will focus on smart city elements, which includes the following:
- Intelligent street lighting is used to detect movements by pedestrians, cars or cyclists, where lights will brighten up when those movements are detected;
- Environmental managements including temperature, humidity, barometric, air quality monitors that can be used to measure and determine weather conditions and the air quality index (AQI);
- Water gauge to monitor water levels in drains, rivers, lakes, dams and water tanks;
- Asset trackers, for example to track public buses operated by Cyberjaya on its arrival time and location;
- Security systems for both homes and offices; and
- Smart parking solution, to locate, reserve and to make payment for the respective parking lots.
The IoT applications completes the LoRa network. Setting up and operating a LoRa network without having any applications will serve very little purpose to the network. The real value and benefits of the LoRa networks comes from the IoT applications itself.

We invite all ecosystem partners who have ready IoT applications, to work with us and integrate their ready IoT applications to be LoRa enabled, and implemented on Cyberjaya’s LoRa network.”
IoT will revolutionise businesses and consumers, like the Internet did in 1990s. Study done by Forrester Consulting and the International Data Corporation (IDC) has shown that IoT is moving ahead as the leader of the IoT adoption in the Asia Pacific region. Statistic shown by Frost & Sullivan that the total spending for IoT in the Asia Pacific estimated at USD 10 billion in 2014, which will grow at a CAGR of 34.1% to reach US 59 billion by 2020.
