ASEAN Game On!

The ASEAN games industry is about to see a major boost in support that will take it to the next level. Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) hosted an ASEAN Games Roundtable Forum to discuss current happenings in the ASEAN games ecosystem in their respective countries. This is a strategic platform created towards building Malaysia as the regional hub for games

The forum was attended by games association leaders from Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, where the discussion covered the current state and scenario of the Games industry, events and programs in their respective countries. The forum hopes to explore and initiate potential collaborations or market access opportunities between the ASEAN countries. For a start, the forum members unanimously agreed to support the development of SEA Games Industry survey, the ASEAN “Game Jam” and GameFounders Asia in Kuala Lumpur. They also shared a high interest on fostering industry – academia collaboration between respective countries.

YBhg Dato’ Sri Dr. Sharifah Zarah binti Syed Ahmad, Secretary General, Ministry Of Communications And Multimedia, said, “Malaysia  is in a good position to work with our ASEAN neighbours to develop the Games industry  in this region to the next level. This is in line with the spirit of the ASEAN Economic Community.

The Malaysian Government sees Games as a sector that we strongly support and it is deemed as a new engine of economic growth. Several grants and incentives are made available focusing on Games development and production.”

The forum is organised in conjunction with the launch of GameFounders Asia, Powered by MSC Malaysia, a partnership between GameFounders and MDeC. This partnership which sees the establishment of GameFounders Asia in Kuala Lumpur; supports Asian games startups or studios to overcome growth challenges by providing in-depth expertise in funding, mentorship and market access specifically for games (more program info and application at This is in line with MDeC’s vision to drive innovation via niche startup acceleration model that provides an efficient formula to increase success probabilities of games startups and lowers the risk of time to market as well as Malaysia’s big push towards digital economy with the Digital Malaysia initiative.

The accelerator program provides access to over 120 top gaming gurus, CEOs and developers from global game studios such as Kings, PopCaps, Rovio, Unity, Nintendo and many more.

GameFounders Asia has just concluded its Big Asia Tour starting off from Singapore, Jakarta, Manila, Tokyo, Ho Chi Minh, Bangkok and several cities in Malaysia with its final leg ending today in Kuala Lumpur. During the 3-weeks period, they have met local developers, established new partnerships and spread the word about GameFounders Asia. Local developers were also provided an opportunity to pitch and seek feedback during these sessions.

According to Newzoo’s 2015 report on ‘Introduction to the Southeast Asian Games Market; Opportunities in the Worlds’ Fastest Growing Games Region’ shows that the Southeast Asian games market is the fastest growing market in terms of games revenues. Revenues of the Southeast Asian games market is expected to double from US$1.1 Bil in 2014 to $2.2Bn by 2017, which is at an impressive CAGR of 28.8% (2013-2017).

MDeC Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Yasmin Mahmood said, “We believe GameFounders Asia initiative arrived at the right moment to tap into this growing sector and provide opportunities to propel youth and game developers’ involvement in entrepreneurship. Beyond this, it will also further enhance the cross border collaborations between countries. The time is now for ASEAN.”

MDeC, as the driver of the National ICT Initiative; MSC Malaysia, and the Digital Economy Initiative; Digital Malaysia, has outlined key strategies in positioning Malaysia as the preferred regional hub for games development and delivery.  These key strategies will build upon Malaysia’s existing digital content sector, which includes attracting anchor companies, increasing local games capacity & capability and raising global market access.

About GameFounders (

GameFounders is a start-up accelerator that works only with game studios. Young game studios are selected from a global pool and relocated to the hub. The teams will go through a 3-month accelerator program of seminars, mentoring sessions, access to gaming partnership deals and introductions to all the relevant people for their game.
